Bridge to Terabithia Discussion Question (5 points)

How does the author challenge "traditional" gender roles in Bridge to Terabithia?

  1. In the book girls aren't allowed to run, or don't like to run. But Leslie loves to run and boys don't usually have girls joining them. So the author says or try's to say that everybody has the right to do anything.

    1. So the author challenges the way of the traditional gender saying that Leslie is a girl and loves to run while most girls don't.

  2. I agree with anu because many girls don't like to run but leslie does. The boys had never had a girl run with them so it was different and they didnt want leslie to run with them. That was the wrong thing to do. Everyone should be able to do everything

  3. It looks like the author challenged the “traditional” gender roles by having the boys on one side of the playground, running, and the girls on the other, jumping rope and playing hopscotch. Lesse was the first, and probably not the last, to go to the boys side of the playground. -Yewell

  4. well Anu, the girls are allowed to run. it's just that the boys prefer them to be doing something else. but leslie want's to stand up for her self.

  5. What do you guys think about Jess hiding that he likes to draw? Is it because his family and community view drawing as a girl activity? Thoughts?

  6. For the first ?. It looks like the author challenged traditional gender roles because in the book Leslie likes stuff like scuba diving and running which normally girls don't do in his area and time.

For the one you wanted us to answer that you commented I think why he didn't want to share that he liked art is because usually girls do that, but I would share that I liked art because being good at art is an amusing talent.

  7. I agree with Lisa. Leslie likes things that other girls normally don't. One example is running, because usually only boys in Lark Creek run. They didn't want her to run because for one thing, she always beat them, but mainly because she was a girl. That was totally wrong, because everyone should be able to do everything. With Jess, he drew a lot, but usually girls did that, so he was afraid to show it unlike Leslie who was confident in who she was and how she was different.

  8. Dylan Gonzalez- My opinion is, the way the author challenged traditional gender roles is that she put Lesile in a race just for boys and she was the fastest and bete all of the boys, so she won. For that time period, girls winning running races against boys is un heard of because girls were not supposed to beat boys.that is the way the author challenges the way girls are stereotyped, especially in the past.

  9. The author challenges traditional gender roles by putting Leslie in a race that girls are not supposed to be in nor want to be in.

  10. I think that Jess keeps it a secerets that he likes to draw because it is not very common for boys that age to be interested in such activities and he doesn't want to be made fun of for it because he probably thinks that it is considered girly
